Battle for NRM Flag Intensifies in Oyam as 16 Candidates Embark on Joint Campaign

Oyam, Uganda | Political activity has intensified in Oyam District as 16 aspirants under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) prepare to embark on a joint campaign across the district’s 16 sub-counties.

The exercise is scheduled to run from 4 to 14 July 2025, excluding weekends.

The aspirants, contesting for District Chairperson (LC V), District Woman MP, and Constituency MP positions, reached a consensus to participate in the harmonised campaign, following a meeting convened by the NRM District Executive Committee and attended by all duly nominated candidates.

The campaign roadmap was officially announced by NRM District Registrar Jackline Adong, who confirmed that each campaign day will feature two sessions, morning and afternoon, held at separate venues.

She emphasized that the campaign schedule was designed to ensure all candidates reach voters across the entire district within the allocated timeframe.

Adong further revealed that 15 July 2025 will be reserved for aspirants to mobilise polling agents in the district’s 1,093 villages, an individual activity meant to strengthen grassroots support ahead of the NRM primary election set for 18 July 2025.

Bosco Onyik Ogwal, the Oyam District NRM Chairperson, cautioned all aspirants to strictly adhere to the joint campaign framework.

He said participation was not optional and reminded candidates that defying party guidelines could lead to disciplinary action.

Resident District Commissioner James Shilaku assured the public of full security coverage throughout the process.

He warned that any acts of indiscipline or breach of the agreed terms by candidates or their supporters would result in immediate intervention by security forces and the party’s executive committee.

Each aspirant will be given 10 minutes to address the electorate during campaign rallies.

The speaking order at each venue will be determined through a lottery system.

The candidates also resolved that no individual campaigns will be allowed during the joint campaign period, as per NRM electoral guidelines.

The campaign comes at a critical time for Oyam District, as internal party competition heightens ahead of the 2026 General Elections.

The joint effort aims to promote cohesion among party aspirants and reduce incidents of conflict or voter confusion during the primaries.
