Police Roll Out Road Safety Campaign in Greater Bushenyi Primary Schools

Bushenyi, Uganda | The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has rolled out a road safety awareness and sensitization campaign targeting primary schools in the Greater Bushenyi region, in a bid to reduce road crashes and instill a culture of responsible road use among young learners.

The campaign is being spearheaded by the Directorate’s Liaison Officer, SP Kananura Micheal, working closely with the Regional Police Commander (RPC), traffic officers, and district leaders.

The initiative seeks to equip school children with basic knowledge on road safety, promote discipline on the roads, and encourage safer practices among pedestrians and road users.

During the school outreach sessions, pupils and teachers engaged directly with traffic officers through interactive lessons and safety demonstrations.

Educational materials such as road safety books, charts with traffic symbols, and guidelines for safe road crossing were distributed.

In a show of support, Shell Uganda donated free crash helmets, which were handed over to pupils as part of efforts to raise awareness on the importance of protective gear, especially for those who ride on motorcycles to and from school.

SP Kananura stressed that road safety is not solely a police responsibility but a shared obligation that requires active participation from all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, motorists, and the wider community.

To further broaden the campaign’s impact, the team conducted radio talk shows across several local stations, reaching thousands of listeners with key safety messages and calls for behavioral change on the road.

The campaign comes at a time when Uganda continues to grapple with high rates of road traffic crashes, many involving school-going children. Authorities say early education on road safety could play a significant role in reversing this trend.
