Lira City Council Launches Community Fitness Initiative to Promote Well-Being

Lira, Uganda | Lira City Council has officially launched a physical fitness program aimed at improving health and well-being among both civil servants and city residents.

The initiative, unveiled at the Mayor’s Garden, highlights the council’s commitment to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle across the community.

Lira City Mayor Sam Atul emphasized that regular exercise is vital not only for physical health but also for mental and emotional well-being.

He encouraged civil servants and residents alike to participate in the fitness sessions while also attending Monday morning prayers, noting that spiritual wellness complements physical fitness and helps start the week with renewed focus and energy.

City Spokesperson Robert Okello Ayo explained that the program aligns with Ministry of Public Service guidelines, which recommend physical activity as a key part of workplace wellness.

He confirmed that the council will hold structured fitness sessions every Tuesday and Thursday, providing an opportunity for city workers and residents to maintain healthy routines.

Deputy Town Clerk Tom Miira added that the exercise initiative is intended for the benefit of the community, encouraging civil servants to embrace the program and keep themselves healthy in order to perform better in their roles.

The fitness program will feature weekly sessions at designated city locations and marks the beginning of a wider campaign by Lira City Council to prioritize health and wellness.

The initiative reflects the city’s vision to foster a healthier, more productive, and engaged community, with both public servants and residents playing an active role in promoting well-being.
